Michelle Roth – Celebrity Designer, Author, Head Designer Henry Roth
Michelle Roth was born to design, immersed in the creativity of her own parent's bridal business Henri Josef from a young age.
Australian born, to Holocaust survivors her burning ambition was fuelled by her parents. Bridal was their joy. The creation of chapters the festivity of love. From the age of Roth 5 was lost in the design world of dreams.
From the age of 7 Roth landed in the fashion centers of the world including Paris, Rome, London, Milan and New York. Her parents took her and her siblings (sister Lilian, now an Architect based in Manhattan and brother Henry with whom she works in their New York bridal business) on International fabric and accessory buying trips. Design was a lifestyle. Fashion experience and training lifelong.
As a child school vacations were spent at her parent's atelier, consumed in patterns, fabric, sketching and draping.
In 1974, Roth completed high school. College education, stolen from her parents, would be her privilege of liberty. Roth was accepted to study at The University of Sydney, at one of Australia's finest houses of learning. In 1978 she graduated with honors in political science.
In 1979, she formally entered Henri Josef as junior designer alongside her mother, Aneta Weinreich. Four years later in 1986, whilst on a buying trip in New York City, she was offered a position at the Australian Consulate. Roth leapt at the opportunity, hungry to absorb and grow, joining an international milieu.
After 5 years of diplomatic service, it was clear that Roth's work was cut out for her. In 1990 she decided to return to her first love, design and remain with a new love, New York City.
Roth sourced from generations of knowledge and experience that span three generations. In the 1900's Malka Sofa Schreiber, her paternal great grandmother from whom she is named, ran a bridal charity organization in Poland. Her maternal grandfather Samuel Baral built a thriving upscale furrier import/export business in Krakow, Poland during the 1920's. Her maternal grandmother, Franka Baral, ran her own major textile company in Australia after the war.
In 1992, Roth opened for business from her own small apartment. Dresses took most of the available space. She sold Henri Josef dresses, importing from Australia. Then, in 1993, she moved to a small midtown space in the Bridal Building. She named her business, Michelle of Australia. She was overwhelmed by the response. The sensitivity to color and the revolutionary use of silk satin won her accolades. Her Australian poise, attention to detail, and highly personalized service won her business. She blossomed.
In 1996 catapulted by the momentum of success Roth opened her magnificent design showroom on 57th street. She had come home. In 1997 her brother Henry joined her to spearhead operations.
In 1998 Michelle married investment banker Peter Roth.
